ABB further expands its range of low voltage IE3 motors for explosive atmospheres

ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, is expanding its range of low voltage cast iron IE3 motors for explosive atmospheres with the introduction of new mid-range products.

ABB now offers a full range of non-sparking (Ex nA) and dust ignition protection (Ex t) motors in frame sizes 71 - 355 (0.25 – 355 kW). It is also well on the way to a full range of flameproof (Ex d and Ex de) motors, with frame sizes 160 – 355 (11 – 355 kW) presently available. Smaller flameproof motors up to frame size 160 can already be provided on request, with standard motors scheduled for launch next year.

ATEX and global IECEx certification are available, and both markings are shown on the rating plates. The motors can be supplied in 2, 4, 6, and 8-pole versions. They are fully available and can now be ordered. All the motors are based on ABB’s well proven and reliable IE2 platform.

“There is clear demand from motor users for these products,” says Tom Eklöf, product manager for Ex motors at ABB. “Even though most regions do not yet have efficiency requirements for motors in explosive atmospheres, plant operators naturally want to maximize the energy efficiency of their processes. As our motors offer IE3 efficiency in the same frame size as IE2, they make it easy to upgrade the efficiency of existing applications.”

The combination of global certification, both 50 and 60 Hz versions and an extensive range from a supplier with worldwide coverage will enable large-scale purchasers to streamline their motor sourcing activities.
